A rare William III desk box with drawer of superior quality and interesting provenance.
The box is of joined (rather than boarded) construction and unusually features a drawer underneath. The front rail is carved with the initials: L.G and dated 1696 which puts its construction in the reign of William III rather than William & Mary.
The box comes with interesting provenance. It was formerly part of the T.E Price-Stretche collection and noted in a publication called Chats on Old Furniture by Arthur Hayden (1905) page 139 (displayed on an associated side table) – book photo image in listing pictures.
Major Thomas Edward Price-Stretche, born in 1865 in Gloucestershire, owned The Manor at Church Stretton between 1926 and early 1940’s. The Old Hall Farmhouse, known as the Manor House, a grade II listed house (16th Century with later additions), is notable for the exposed framing and panelled ceilings. The Major regarded himself as the village squire, perhaps in rivalry with Dr. McClintock of The Grove. Various 16th and 17th pieces in his ownership at the time are featured in the book.
Condition: The box is in structurally sound condition with solid joints. Some historic alterations include a replacement handle (as per 1905 photo), lid hinge strengthening batons inside and some baton and metal brackets on the back. A section of oak is missing from above the drawer when it has been forced open while locked.
