ANTIQUE FRENCH DOOR KNOCKER
A huge antique French cast iron door knocker of Chateau size proportions!
From a large building near Carcassonne, this knocker has a baroque inspired backplate, massive cast iron pivoting knocker and original strike plate. Both parts come with large original bolts and nuts. The back plates are sheet metal rather than cast iron.
In some images the knocker is mounted on a piece of wood, this is purely for display purposes and is not included in the sale.
Provenance: reclaimed from the former: The Royal Montolieu textile factory, built in 1738, near Carcassonne in South West France. The building (Maison de Textile) now incorporates a home and self catering accommodation.
Date: 18th Century, probably after 1738
Condition: Good antique but unrestored condition. It has the original strike plate. There is a very thick, crusty and authentic build-up of historic paint, mostly dark brown with a little white. The knocker has a tightly engineered hinge to the pivot fixing point which operates with fine precision. The rococo / baroque back plate has some deterioration and has a break in the centre scroll but has a nearby screw hole to hold it fixed down. Small fixing screws will be required to secure the back plate of both the knocker and the strike plate – 15 in total.
