19TH CENTURY FRENCH STAND
An unusual and very decorative Gothic revival ormolu stand, few stands are as imposing as this amazing example.
Probably of French or Italian origin, the stand has griffins at each corner. The rear of the stand is open. Possibly designed for ecclesiastical use, this stand would now be ideal for lots of potential uses; the top is quite a good size at approximately 28cm square.
The front has some enamel work and an attached plaque with an inscription in Latin: Fiat Lux – Let there be light. The sides are similar to the front but without enamel.
It comes with the piece of red velvet pictured.
Date: mid to late 19th Century.
Condition: Good functional and sturdy condition. Plenty of gilt remains although it has some wear, tarnish and verdigris. The top is bent down, more towards the rear and also has discoloured spots, verdigris and light scratches. The piece of velvet is crudely cut, creased and is holed but serves as a temporary decorative cover.
