An unusual African carved wooden oliphant, used as a hunting horn or trumpet.
The ‘oliphant’ has a long history, originally carved from the tusks of an elephant, the tusk design with either end or side mouthpieces probably originate from the Medieval period.
This carved wooden variant is surmounted by a sitting figure with elongated head, over a criss-cross reticulated platform. The side-blown mouthpiece is flanked by geometric designs and flower petal designs to the trumpet end. The tribal association is unknown at present.
Date: Early 20th Century.
Condition: Fair condition. The wood has a good patina and the carving is fairly well executed. There is a small degree of non-structural wear and the decorative trim to the trumpet mouth is absent.
