ARTS & CRAFTS STYLE JARDINIERE ~ £190
An unusually designed and probably one-off brass jardiniere created from a very large WW1 German heavy artillery cartridge case.
Made in very heavy gauge brass this piece weighs nearly 6kg. It would also make an interesting display stand if used upside down – see the last two images!
Manufactured by Polte in Madgeburg, the shell has been converted into this lovely planter with the decoration having some design influence of the Arts & Crafts movement. The rim has been cut and splayed to create 14 ‘petals’ and the cut out sections fixed to the base of the body with punched dot decoration between them.
The shell case was probably used in a Morser or Howitzer gun and has a diameter of 220mm.
Condition: Good functional uncleaned condition. The interior has been painted in matt black. The internal base has a raised flange around the central percussion cap, so it may help to use an inverted tray to support a pot. The brass has tarnish spots and some old cleaning material residue in the punched dots.
