A stunning antique cast copper panel, depicting various classical, possibly Greek, scenes including a harbour setting with a small boat, merchants, shepherds and a fisherman, plus a god-like figure with a dog, possibly Zeus. To the right hand side of the panel sheep are being driven towards a family and soldier (who is holding a spear and shield). The scene is overlooked by some gentry in the grounds of a substantial building behind a tall wall.
Although the panel is quite small at just over a foot long, the detail is astonishing, some of our photos of the figures have been taken with x30 magnification. The features are so intricate that aspects of the detail measure under 1 mm. The subject matter in relief ensures that the whole scene is perfectly visible, standing out against the background.
The panel is supplied with an ebonised wood frame and behind glass, which has prevented the copper from unnecessary tarnishing. Consequently it has a really beautiful patina, not unlike the colour of antique rose gold. The panel was once wall hung before being framed many years ago.
Condition: Fine condition with no damage to the copper. The frame has a section glued on the right hand side and some light wear on the corners.
Date: Possibly Victorian, framed in the early 20th Century in the Sheffield area.
