Fornaci di Barga, Italy
VICTORIAN GWR HOTELS SAUCEPAN
A heavy antique saucepan stamped with the words GWR Hotels, possibly nichel puro (it’s hard to read – pure nickel in Italian?), Made in Italy, Fornaci di Barga, and various letters and numbers P36, and 5 with an arrow shape. GWR stands for Great Western Railway which operates (since the 1830’s) from London to Cornwall. These pans were used in the company’s hotels along the route and onboard the trains themselves. The pan is heavy and magnetic – probably pure nickel (the handle is not metallic so could be bronze).
