PAIR OF USUBATA VASES
A lovely antique pair of heavy Japanese usubata brass vases, inlaid with silver and a little copper and gold. Very substantially cast, the pair weigh 8.311 kg.
Of two part socketed construction, these vases are traditionally used for ikebana – the Japanese art of flower arranging. The vases could also be used as multipurpose stands but would make very eye-catching jardiniere (planter) stands.
The rim flange, rim edge, body and plinth have areas of etched foliate detail with butterflies and birds, some of which have applied silver and gold.
The planters used as props in the images are not included.
Date: Early 20th century, Meiji or Taisho period.
Condition: Fair condition. The brass has some spots and areas of tarnish. The underside of the bases have full patina of a very dark bronze colour. There is some discolouration of the applied silver finish.
