ANTIQUE TUAREG CAMEL BAG
An amazing rare antique stitched leather ‘camel eye’ bag made and used by the desert dwelling, nomadic Berber Tuareg tribe of North and West Africa. It was worn across the body while travelling by camel. This stunning bag is intricately stitched with thin leather strips and threads of varying shades and has remains of a daintily stitched red wool decoration, which sadly has deteriorated in places. There are two compartments inside. This bag would greatly benefit from some sympathetic restoration by an expert – this would help it to survive another few hundred years, as the leather has become hard and brittle. It no longer has its shoulder strap or rope.
Would look amazing hanging on a wall as part of a boho inspired decor.
Age: circa 1800’s or earlier
Condition: The leather has gone stiff with age, one wide leather tassel is missing from the fringe on the bottom, The red wool decoration has worn away in places on the round ‘camel eyes’.
