ANTIQUE VETERINARY BOTTLE – R.H. Penhale, Holsworthy, Devon
An antique veterinary bottle, with its original label, contents and stopper. The bottle is clear glass and tablespoon measurements on the back. The label is for R. H. Penhale, MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon, Holsworthy. It looks like it contains ‘Astringent Bismuth’ possibly an antidiarrheal for dogs. I believe the hand written instructions read ‘Mixture for dog. Two teaspoonful to be given 3 times daily’. Mitzi appears to be the name of the dog!
Amazingly the company of vets is still in existence, now called Penbode Vets. Richard Penhale was a Captain in the army during WW1 and looked after thousands of horses on the Mesopotamian front and earned a Military Order of the British Empire. More info here: Penbode Vets, Holsworthy, Devon
The white (when mixed) contents is still mostly liquid. The original cork is firmly in the top.
The bottle has a moulded lip, suggesting it was made after the 1910’s. The number 4 is embossed on the base.
The last photo shows other chemist and vet bottles I currently have for sale.
