AFRICAN FERTILITY FIGURE
A hand-carved female figure possibly from the Teke people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire.
This carving is typical of the female figure depicted with one hand placed on the prominent abdomen; the other on a breast.
This large figure standing at over 19″ tall could have been a personal fertility symbol, possibly commissioned by a tribal individual.
She bears a good original and completely untouched patina, the crudely applied original finish being clearly visible. The figure has the original plant fibre neck rope and belt which retains the remnants of a woven skirt or loin cloth.
Date: Mid 20th Century
Condition: Good original condition commensurate with age. The rear of the loin cloth is perished. The figure has a little section absent on the right ear. The left hand ear appears to have been covered by a headdress or was absent when originally carved. The feet soles have wear although the figure will stand upright unsupported. There are a few old historic woodworm holes.
