VICTORIAN CERAMIC SCALE WEIGHT ~ 4oz
A rare Victorian 4oz porcelain grocer’s scale weight. There is a lead plug in the base, with some faint, unreadable, verification stamps impressed and also some black wax. Ceramic weights were banned from use in the early 20th century because they chipped easily, as this one has, and also soaked up fat and grease from produce being weighed, thus changing the accuracy of the weight. After this metal weights only were allowed to be used commercially. Would make a lovely small paperweight, or addition to a collection of weights.
