John Marston
An elegant brass jug / pitcher by John Marston of Wolverhampton.
This simple but elegant brass pitcher is a refined variation of the jug design which is inspired by Christopher Dresser’s work. This example has a band of four strengthening (and cosmetically enhancing) ribs to both the upper neck and the upper body. Plain versions were also made by Marston.
Marston was born in 1836 and as a young man was apprenticed to Richard Perry, Son & Co who were known users of Dresser’s inspired design work. In 1871 upon the death of his employer, Marston bought the business at Jeddo Works, Wolverhampton and in 1877 extended the works into Paul Street. Around this time Marston moved from japanning and enamelling into the business of brass and copper manufacture, which he sold in 1902.
This jug is stamped with the John Marston mark, the pattern number 3 and the size 3.
