Archibald Kenrick & Sons
VICTORIAN DOOR LETTER PLATE WITH KNOCKER – Kenrick No. 443
A lovely vertical cast iron 19th Century combined letter slot & door knocker by the sought-after manufacturer. Archibald Kenrick & Sons Ltd. The front is embossed ‘LETTERS’. (The actual slot for the mail is small, as mail was small in Victorian days.)
The rear of the knocker bears the name of the maker however the pattern number and registered design number are no longer legible due to oxidation of the iron. I’ve researched the item and the pattern number is 443 and the registered design number I believe is 191108 – for the year 1892.
Date: 19th Century
Condition: Good functional condition. Aged patina / oxidation. There is a small hole (for a nail?) in the back plate. It has had a repair using solder at the bottom of the back plate (see photos). Some surface wear to the left of the front of the back plate. It has some slight remains of old green paint on the back, having been probably painted at some point in its history. The two fixing screws look to be later replacements.
