ANTIQUE DEVON STAVE SPLIT WOOD BASKET
A rare 19th century handmade Devon stave basket made from split oak wood slats with a solid wood base (probably elm). It has a bent wood handle and band around the middle and top. The base has an iron band part way round it (some has worn away). The slats are secured with nails, some of which are handmade. These stave or splint baskets are local to North and West Devon, and would have been used to harvest fruit and vegetables, and carrying animal feed on the farm etc.
Age: 19th century.
Condition: Well made, heavy and sturdy, still usable. Some wear to bottom of slats. Nails and metal band rusty. Aged patina to wood.
