VICTORIAN MEDIEVAL STYLE ORMOLU ‘FAUX BOOK’ BOX
An astonishing Gothic 19th Century jewellery or trinket box in gilt bronze (ormolu). It’s a good heavy piece weighing nearly 1.5kg.
The box has been beautifully crafted in the manner of a book – like a Victorian bible with a clasp; it even has faux pagination to the edges.
Amazingly and intricately styled with Gothic features on both sides as well as the ‘spine’; the front and back covers have quatrefoils in roundels border enclosing a foliate theme and central feature with a boss.
The box has thistle emblems in the design which could potentially suggest it has a Scottish provenance.
Date: mid to late 19th Century.
Condition: Good functional condition. The clasp closes firmly. The ormolu has developed a good patina and has the usual gilt loss to the raised points. There are no dings, dents or damage and the hinge works perfectly. There is an area of brown staining, or burn mark on the bottom (or rear cover). Internally the aged velvet is tired, it’s a bit crinkly now!
