A magnificent and imposing (1 metre tall) 19th Century, fully restored large copper lantern, ready for installation.
Formerly a Victorian gas light of post top design, this beautiful lantern has undergone a very expensive full restoration. It was originally converted to electricity a long time ago and brackets were made for wall mounting, arguably making it more useful.
The copper has been sensitively restored leaving the considerable patina for authenticity. The wrought iron brackets have been refinished and a new timber plate attached for wall mounting. The wall fixing plate has not been drilled to allow the buyer to select the optimum screw hole position to suit their masonry.
It has been rewired with modern insulated flex and earthed for safety.
The most aesthetic aspect is obviously the beautiful (and expensive!) Gothic glass. ‘Gothic Blue’ is reproduced from Pugin’s original design circa 1840 (early Victorian). A Gothic cross forms the centre of the etched pattern, the cross is fired with an enamel to create a blue colour detail which is semi-opaque. The remainder of the pattern is left clear and the background is frosted. When illuminated it creates a beautifully diffused light but with the pattern still very apparent.
The restoration has achieved a truly amazing and one-off piece; once installed it will be a very commanding addition to a property and is sure to be noticed. Suitable for various locations, both internal and external.

Date: Circa mid Victorian.
Ready for installation with new wiring and glazing. The copper has tarnish, verdigris and discolouration. The brackets and timber plate have been refinished with several coats of matt black paint. The finial on the canopy is patinated spelter. There are uneven putty lines around the new glass due to the age, flexibility of copper and slight distortion of the framework.
