VICTORIAN YEAR BOOK OF GIFTS AND GRACES ~ Birthday Book
A beautiful 19th century small notebook that was used to record birthdays, memorable dates etc. It is entitled ‘A Year Book of Gifts and Graces’ and published by Seeley & Co, 54 Fleet St, London and Henry Frowde, 7 Paternoster Row (Oxford University Press) – who are easy and interesting to research on the internet.
This delightful little book has a pretty picture of a dove, forget-me-not flowers and a cross. It has gilded page edges and spine, a gilt mount around the cover edges and a clasp. Inside are Bible verse quotes, dates and spaces for memos.
There are hand written names, some with the year of birth. Many of the names are of the Trotman family from Gloucestershire, which can be researched from census websites. There are also Cox family names, possibly from Dorset and Gloucestershire. One particular page has a tiny newspaper cut out with the details of a death, date and location of a burial in Beaminster, Dorset.
Condition: Lovely condition, considering how old it is. There are some surface marks and wear and some children’s pencil scribbles in a few places. The pages are very tidy.
