VINTAGE FRENCH VERRE EGLOMISE JAR
A beautiful French verre églomisé jar. It appears to be hand blown, as there are no moulding seams. Verre eglomise means it has been silvered internally and is not the same as mercury glass. With mercury glass the silver layer is encased within two layers of glass. This silver layer is on the inside and is, due to age, partly peeling off giving it that desirable antique look. This quality makes this jar a perfect tea light holder.
It is possible this jar may have been a pharmacy jar (missing its lid), if so it could be 19th century – or it could be a modern reproduction for use a tea light holder – you will have to decide for yourself. At some point pretty French style scrolled initials were applied to the outside in silver paint to resemble etching. The initials are hard to decipher but look like they could be ‘D S’.
Condition: Aged patina. As mentioned the ‘silver’ lining inside is easily damaged, so it is not suitable for storing food or holding liquids. No chips.
