An unusual 17th century (with later additions) carved oak overmantle of large proportions. The overmantle is currently resting upon a modern wooden shelf (shown in photos) which is not an integral part of the item and not included in this sale.
This interesting piece mainly comprises of the front of the top section of a 17th century court cupboard. The cornice which is an addition, dates from the Victorian period and was possibly formerly a wardrobe canopy.
It could have various potential uses as well an overmantle. It has been used recently in the capacity of a stylised half-tester bed canopy or ciel de lit, with curtains draped from the canopy over a super king sized bed.
Date: Circa 1630-1650 with mid to late Victorian canopy.
Condition:
Good functional condition, with a few cosmetic points to note. The middle panel is different to the outer doors which have been fixed shut and the former key holes filled. The right hand bulbous support has a section missing on the outer edge. The cornice has six screw holes. Two cosmetic blocks are absent at the bases of the carved pilasters on the mullions.
